The Omaha Entertainment and Arts Awards Showcase is a special weekend. It’s the only time of year when you can catch 76 bands playing six venues over two days for only $15. And the diverse culture the weekend offers is not to be missed. Last night between hip hop sets, we jumped around catching everything from metal to Latin to soul. And all within a 3-block radius in downtown Benson, it can feel more like a mini Austin at times than Omaha, complete with pizza and taco food trucks.
Conscious rapper Shuless kicked off the OEAA showcase’s hip hop genre, performing an 8:00 set at Burke’s Pub. With people just starting to filter in, this time slot is one of the hardest to play, but with soulful production, thought-provoking lyrics, and strong delivery, Shuless rose to the occasion.
Some of his proclamations between songs included, “I like it old school” and “This is some soul shit.” And with lyrics like “find a track back to happiness” coupled with production by Andy Boonstra (Purveyors of the Conscious Sound), the vibe was soulful indeed.
